About Around Your Town Tuesday...

Several weeks ago my bloggy pal, Courtney and I rolled out a new blog hop called Around Your Town Tuesday.  We were very excited about it and thought it would be something unique and somewhat encouraging to bloggers to get out into their communities as well as learn about fellow bloggers' communities, especially since warm weather is upon us.  We got lots of positive responses on our blog posts about it, in our BlogFrog communities, Twitter, etc. and we still get great emails and comments about it.  However, the linking up has been pretty scarce and it's an awful lot of work on our part to prepare the posts, the schedule, post reminders, promote.... you get the picture.  So for now, Courtney and I have decided to put it on hold and re-evaluate the blog hop.  We're going to talk about it, maybe change it up a bit, marinate in our thoughts and could very possibly bring it back - if there's any interest.  So if you are interested in participating in this blog hop in the future, please leave a comment or shoot us an email.  Constructive criticism is certainly welcome.  We'd definitely love to hear from you about how we could improve it, change it up, whatever.  But if there's no feedback, it will most likely be discontinued.

Around Your Town Tuesday - Historical Sites

Hey Everyone,
I'm behind today.  I was up half of the night preparing presentation boards, so please forgive me. I will have it up later this afternoon.  Thanks for being patient with me.

Welcome to Tybee Island Light House.

Little History:

Ordered by General James Oglethorpe, Governor of the 13th colony, in 1732, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years.  The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America's most intact meaning having all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site.  It was rebuilt several times, the current light station displays its 1916 day mark with 178 stairs, and a First Order Fresnel lens which is 9 feet tall.  

Before I moved to Savannah approximately 2 years ago, I went to the Tybee Light House with family.  It was an interesting and exciting experience, but bring your walking shoes.  

You have exactly 178 steps to climb up a narrow stairway.

Around Your Town Tuesday - Best Food

This week the topic is Best Food in town.  

That is a very hard topic for me since I am in Savannah, and we have some of the BEST FOOD around.  

Picking one restaurant in Savannah was not a choice for me... I couldn't make a decision.

I did narrow it down to a few places that I have been to recently.  So here it goes...

Breakfast:

My two favorite places to eat breakfast in Savannah are Harris Bakery and J. Christopher's.  

They are very different, and serve uniquely different foods. 

Harris Bakery 

Harris Bakery is located on East Liberty Street in Drayton Towers.  

It is a fresh and delicious bakery with fresh bread and bakery treats baked daily.

I've been to this bakery for breakfast and lunch, and have always found a tasty treat.

Bacon, Ham, and Cheese Croissant

(It was delicious!)

Blueberry Pastry

Tasty, Tasty

No Matter what time of day you stop by Harris Bakery, they always have tasty treats.

J. Christopher's

J. Christopher's is located on 122 E. Liberty Street, and you better get there early during tourist season to get a seat.  I can promise you this though.. even if you have to wait, it's well worth it.

All I have to say is I ate half of them, and before we were gone...

 Everyone else at the table had devoured them.  

Lunch/Brunch/Dinner:

These were even harder to choose, and they all have serve distinctly different foods.  

Soho South Cafe
Soho South Cafe is also located on Liberty Street.  (Maybe that's where most of the good food is..)
This was the first time I had ever eating at Soho, but it was delicious.

When I walked in.. I never expected it to be so vintage, but I love it.
Definitely reflects Savannah.

Vinnie Van Go Go's

Vinnie Van Go Go's is located in City Market. (Tourist Spot, but locals love it.)
The pizza at Vinnie's is so YUMMY.
 This is another restaurant that if you plan on eating.. You better get there early.

However, there is outdoor seating.

This isn't the piece of pizza, but it is that big.
I usually get once slice and I am stuffed by the time I leave.


These are just a FEW of my favorite places. 

Just because there are famous spots in Savannah, doesn't mean you should waste your time standing in line.  Not in this city at least.  Thanks for joining me and learning about some of the best restaurant in town from a local.

Welcome to Forsyth Park!

Forsyth Park is not only the largest park in Savannah, GA, but I would say that it is truly the most active park in Savannah, GA.  Forsyth Park occupies 30 acres and lies between Drayton and Whitaker Streets; it contains walking paths, a children's play area, a NEW pavilion, a confederate memorial, and a large fountain.

Isn't it just breathtaking?!

The BEAUTIFUL Fountain...

It was added at the north end of the park in 1858 and is reminiscent of fountains in the Place de la Concorde in Paris and Cuzco, Peru.  

Confederate Memorial

This Confederate Memorial Statue stands in the middle of Forsyth Park with the path wrapping around it.  The work of art was donated by the Monroe County Courthouse to commemorate those volunteers who gave their lives fighting for the Confederacy.

The NEW Pavilion....

The new Pavilion is AMAZING! I actually went in for my first time on Saturday, and I thought it was a great addition to Forsyth Park.  It has a little cafe with all kinds of great treats. (P.S. Starbucks coffee is even in there.) I also did a little sketching, because the architectural features are quite stunning.  

This is the back side of the Pavilion.  It is used for concerts, and the children love to play in the water feature right in front of the stage.  

This is the vast open area at the park.  It is usually filled with people laying on blankets either relaxing with friends or family, sunbathing, reading, or playing with their furry friends.

     Savannah, GA was established in 1733,  That's the year General James Oglethorpe and the 120 passengers of the good ship "Anne" landed on the bluff high along the Savannah River in February.  Oglethorpe named the 13th and the final American colony "Georgia" after England's King George II.  Savannah became its first city.  Savannah is located in the heart of Coastal Georgia's Lowcountry.

     Savannah is enriched with genuine southern hospitality, and history that resonates into the present.  The Historic Savannah is filled with art, culture, live theater, and historic landmarks.  It is one of the oldest cities in America, and the sight of many revolutionary and civil war battles.  These many attributes are what make people fall in love with the very diverse culture of the city of Savannah.  Today, Savannah attracts nearly 7 million visitors every year, which sparks 7 million cases of love at first sight.

In honor of our readers and the arrival of spring, we would love to see where you live, learn about your town and experience it all through your eyes and your words.  This is a great opportunity for all of us to step away from the computer and get into our communities as well as to connect with other bloggers by undergoing a journey through one anothers' towns without ever leaving our own. Think of it - a glimpse back into history, inspiration to try something new, or just plain fun! Our hope is that you will enjoy it and learn something about one another.  

Enough of the rambing.. Here are the details..

Since this blog hop will require a little footwork (hence, the need for your walking shoes) Courtney and I are implementing this blog hop biweekly.  This will give us all TWO full weeks to get into our towns and prepare posts.  We can change this in the future if this proves to be a success and not too difficult for a weekly blog hop.  For each post, we will give you a subject to compose your post around (i.e. best food in town, farmer's markets, bakeries, ect.)

There are a few guidelines, however.  This post must be authentic and personal.  We don't really want to read what Wikipedia  says about your town.  We want to know what YOU think and feel about your town.  And again, this is about stepping out into our communities and experiencing  something and helping others experience it with us.  Googling it won't really have the same effect either.  But Google and Wikipedia can help you out a little with the facts about your town and its history should you need it.  Just don't make this a book report.  It is understandable  that you can't always get out and take recent pictures.  After all, we all have lives outside of this blogging world.  Therefore, past pictures may be used in your post as long as they are, in fact, your pictures.  

The first official day of the blog hop will be Tuesday, April 6th, 2010.  We're going to keep the subject matter simple and general for out first post.  Therefore, our first post will be Town Introductions.  Where do you live? What is your town known for? When was your town established? Maybe include a picture of your own town square, city hall, the town's sign, etc.  Your post can be as long or as short as you choose.  MckLinky will be up and going at 5:00 AM CST on post day and will shut down at midnight.  Please post the Around the Town Tuesday's badge somewhere in your post which can be found on my sidebar or on the Blog Hop page (link in the Menubar) linking back to Exposing the Drapes to My 20's.
