Answers..

First of all, Thanks for all the questions that you asked.. This has been really fun for me, and I hope you enjoy too.

Here are some of the questions...

Q: What is your favorite design you have done thus far?
A: I'd have to say that my favorite project wasn't even an Interior Design Project. It was a project that included all the basics of designing, and where I learned how to hand draft. I designed everything within the space; however, I didn't pick out furniture, fabrics, paint colors or anything to that extent. Perhaps that's why I like it. I don't have pictures of that design or I would share. : (

Q:What are some HOT paint colors right now? or color schemes?
A: I've heard that Paint Colors are affected by fashion, but I've never really tested this theory. I'm going to be honest, I don't know the HOT color schemes so I'm not gonna try. As a student of Interior Design, we don't base out designs off of the HOT color schemes or what some would call the "IN" colors. We base our designs off of what the client is looking for, their needs, wants, inspirations, and last but not least their likes and dislikes.

Example: In my own apartment, I took some of my own art work and used it as inspiration.

These are drawings and pieces of art that I did in my Sophomore Year of College.

I used these pictures to figure out the color schemes for my main living area. I didn't use the exact shades; however, I took the colors and did them in multiple shades. I personally don't feel that a space should be "matchy matchy".
My opinion of 'IN' colors also is influenced by what I like. I'm not a beige tan kinda person unless it is used in moderation. I am being forced to deal with the tan colors due to being in an apartment. My word of advice: Don't be scared of COLOR.

Q: What do you make a focal point? Is making the TV a focal point a 'no no'?
A: Yes, making the TV is a 'NO NO.' Even if you never turn the fireplace on, I still feel that it is a 'No No.' Many people are guilty of this and sometimes I'd have to say I'm included.

Q:What got you interested in Interior Design?
A: Interior Design has always been something I've been interested in. In high school, I was apart of the Drama Team, which was a great experience for me. I ended up designing the set design for my junior and senior play performances. This gave me the extra push to find a college that would give me the opportunity to receive a Interior Design Degree. Before deciding that I would major in Interior Design, I was going to major in Architectural Engineering. After much research and an introduction to Savannah College of Art and Design, I knew I had found what I was looking for all along the way.
At times, it is much more than what I even expected. So many times people think that an Interior Designer just picks out paint colors, fabric selections, furniture and etc. ,but it is MUCH MORE than that. Some would just like to pick out that kind of stuff, but I find it a very tedious job.

Main Design Dilemma:
This is a question I received from Elizabeth @Harmony Song...

Q: When I am in the process of putting final touches on my room, what is the appropriate amount of pattern in one room? Her walls are cream, and bedding had flowers on it. Here other question was how to mix patterns in the same room? Do my curtains contain too much pattern?

After receiving this question.. A picture was needed.

The Bedroom.. Dilemma Room

A: I think that a room can contain different patterns as long as it is used in moderation. I think that one also has to consider the scale of one pattern compared to the other. I would have to agree that the curtains do have too much pattern compared to the other pattern going on with the bedding. I don't necessarily have a problem with the color, but with the small scale of the design on the curtains.
If I had the option to come into the space and make just small changes, I would probably change the curtains to either a mocha color (dark brown) or find a curtain with a subtle pattern that blends. (Example Below) If I was finishing this room completely and keeping the wall color and every thing existing, I would do some solid color throw pillows on the bed that match the bedding colors, and I would add lighting on a side table.

Elizabeth, I hope I answered your question.

This is an example of a pattern that is subtle, but yet incorporates it within a room that might be filled with pattern.

This photo is of the overall curtain. One may not realize that it is full pattern; however, it is very subtle.

Here is an example of using two different patterns in one place.

These are from my living room, and as you can see the patterns are very different, but using some of the same colors. They are also on a solid brown couch, with no other pattern around them.
This pillow is on another chair in my living room. As you can see, I have 3 different patterns within 10 feet. I think that as long as you remember the scale of a pattern along with keeping the same color palette, you will be fine.

I hope I answered all of your questions.. If you have further questions about my explanation and reasoning, just drop me an email. I hope you enjoyed this Q & A, and hopefully I can do a Design Dilemma post often.

So, Do you have a design dilemma? If so, drop me a comment, and let me know what the dilemma is. You will receive an email from me shortly if you have a dilemma that I can help you with. Looking forward to the next Design Dilemma.

Hope you are all having a great week..

Thanks for answering my questions Jes!! My couch faces my Tv and not the fireplace, but the fireplace it in the corner..weird angle..I'd soo much rather it face the fireplace though, just don't see how it would work...
